Book Review - Two Witches and a Whiskey + Mini Review

Two Witches and a Whiskey by Annette Marie
(Guild Codex: Spellbound #3)
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Three months ago, I landed a job as a bartender. But not at a bar—at a guild. Yeah, the magic kind.

I'm not a badass mage like my three smokin' hot best friends. I'm not a sorcerer or an alchemist, or even a wussy witch. I'm just a human, slinging drinks like a pro and keeping my non-magical nose out of mythic business. Seriously, I know my limits.

So why am I currently standing in a black-magic ritual circle across from a fae lord?

Somewhere behind me, my three mage friends are battling for their lives. Somewhere near my feet is the rogue witch I just knocked out with a stolen spell. And I have about five seconds to convince this very angry sea god not to shmoosh me like a bug.

I'm pretty sure this wasn't part of the job description.

Have you started the series yet? If not, go here:

OK so Tori has put herself into mortal peril - again, but for reals this time, she might actually die if the guild (or Zak) can’t fix this horrible mess. Oh Tori, what have you gone and done now?
This girl is so so good at getting herself into trouble. Well I guess that’s what happens when you’re an impulsive, fearless human who works at a magical guild and hangs out with bounty hunting mythics.
I think this is my favourite in the series so far. Just so much wow. More druid, more fae, more life threatening situations than you can poke a stick at!

This book kind of continues the fae/druid storyline, so more yummy Zak yay, but also introduces a bunch more trouble in the form of super nasty rogue guild Red Rum, and the agents from the MPD. Plus an uber-powerful sea god. This series just went next level. We also find out what the shiny coloured fae orb thing is that Zak left with Tori - Spoilers! But it’s on the cover and it’s so pretty :D and I want one gah!

Tori’s dilemma of being a magicless human playing with mythics and wanting so badly to be part of their world and have magic just resonates with me so much! I’ve been reading fantasy and wishing for magic to be real my whole life, so I totally get this feeling! I don’t think I’ve ever read this in a fantasy book before and I love that the author went there, and I also love the way it gets resolved at the end. Tori’s uncertainty about her place at the Guild and even her friendship with Kai, Aaron and Ezra has been a resounding theme through the three books in this series, and I’m so glad that it gets resolved the way it does. What a fantastic ending! I can’t wait to see what new shenanigans this will lead to (there will be plenty, I'm sure).

The relationship? with Aaron. I really like how that went, and I don’t want to spoil it but, I’m still rooting for Ezra with Zak coming in a close second. Marie really knows how to write some nice, hot guys, (who are not dickheads, yay, I don't get into that trope), and yes they’re ridiculous good looks (for actual reasons - being strong/fit helps with their magic) is a little over-the-top and Tori is a bit immature about it, but that’s probably the only thing that bothers me about this book.

The story is fantastic as always and kept me riveted all the way through this energetic, action-packed fantasy right to the nail-biting conclusion, which is very satisfying. Seriously the ending just made me so so happy. I loved it! Bravo!

Kai’s backstory - yes please! I want to see more of that. I don’t want to say too much because of spoilers, but black market and fiancee whaaat? Darius - Guild Master Extraordinaire, is just fabulous in this! His odd little appearances make me like him so much and we find out what sort of magic he has, which is really cool!
EZRA! I think I have him figured out but I probably don’t. 😄 We get more hints, and see some more crazy fighting action from him, but still waiting on that explanation!!! I actually can’t wait for it. He is so adorable and mysterious and he’s just my favourite! If you're #TeamEzra like me then you need to check out Four Shifters and a Stranger - see below.

This is a world that I can just live in inside my head for days and days after finishing. I get such good book hangovers from this series and it makes me so happy that there’s 5 more books, and two spin-offs ahead of me to keep living in this magical wonderland of urban fantasy. Thank you Annette Marie, you rock!

Mini Review: Four Shifters and a Stranger.

This little gem is a free shot story in the Guild Codex world. Get it here by signing up to Annette Marie's mailing list. It's worth it! Go do it! It is the story of how Kai and Aaron meet Ezra and how our three favourite mages team up.
I love these guys! It's nice to know more of their backstory, even if it's just a little snippet.

I always want to know more about Ezra, he’s my absolute favourite and he is so mysterious, and while this doesn’t tell us much (it is very short, literally 3 chapters) it does tell the story of how the three mages meet, and how Ezra became part of the Crow and Hammer Guild. Yay!

It also shows more of Aaron’s character (it is written from his perspective), and how he is such a good guy, and that he went to such lengths to help out a stranger who needed it.

I can’t wait to read the rest of the series, and find out more of Ezra’s secrets. I need to know everything!!!

Happy reading!
