Book Review - Dark Arts and a Daiquiri

Dark Arts and a Daiquiri by Annette Marie
(Guild Codex: Spellbound #2)
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

When I found myself facing down the scariest black-magic felon in the city, practically daring him to abduct me, I had to wonder exactly how I ended up here.
It all started when I accidentally landed a job as a bartender--but not at a bar. At a guild, populated by mages, sorcerers, alchemists, witches, and psychics. Good thing this lame-o human is adaptable, right?
Then my favorite guild members--three sexy, powerful, and intermittently charming mages--asked for my help. Did they want access to my encyclopedic knowledge of cocktails? Oh no. They wanted to wrap me up in a pretty ribbon and plunk me in the crosshairs of a murderous rogue to lure him out of hiding.
So that's what we did. And that's why I'm here. About to be kidnapped. Oh, and our grand plan for safely capturing said murderous rogue? Yeah, that completely fell apart about two minutes ago. Why did I agree to this again?

Check out my review for book 1: Three Mages and a Margarita

So Tori has gotten herself into trouble again. All in the name of saving a missing teenage girl of course, she wouldn’t do something dangerous and reckless for no reason! Also her three mage friends Aaron, Ezra and Kai are almost totally to blame for this one, but they are trying to catch the most notorious rogue in the city. One needs the correct bait for such an ambitious endeavour. Of course it all goes pear-shaped immediately, leading to oodles of fun and an epic magical showdown.

I only knew two guild rules: One, don’t hit first, but always hit back, and two, don’t get caught.

I am loving this series so far, and in this one we get to see how Tori manages on her own, especially in a completely unexpected and confusing situation. This girl does not give up, she is a survivor who makes her own rules and has no fear. How is she still alive, by the way? This book just has so much cool stuff going on and I’m trying really hard to not give spoilers, so you just have to go read it, OK?!

“Wait, dark arts?” “Yep.” “Oh, finally, something I understand. I’ve read all the Harry Potter books.”

You guys, the dialogue! If you like fun, sassy, hilarious banter, then this series is for you because it is off the charts! I don’t always relate to Tori as a character but when she loses her temper and runs her mouth off you know you’re gonna have a good time! And just look at her trying to keep secrets! Oh she’s just so bad at it - never tell this girl anything! I think the writing in this is just really clever and so well done. These books just really are so much fun to read. I mean, why haven’t I binged them all yet? Why? Don’t worry, that is next on my to-do list.

Whoa, did she say elves? Were we talking Legolas or Dobby? ’Cause I definitely knew which I preferred.

Druids and dragons and fae, oh my! Such fun and random new characters! Let’s start with everyone’s favourite: Zak. I’m still #TeamEzra but I very much enjoyed the super duper evil, murdering, child-abducting oh-so-bad guy Druid. I mean, it’s really all about the reputation isn’t it? Also he’s really hot and has awesome powers and is just the best - but can he handle little ol’ human Tori and her impulsive lack of self-preservation? I think not!
Did I say dragons? Yes, dragons. Which was an unexpected but very pleasant surprise for me. That pretty much put the cherry on the cake for this series, it really doesn’t get any better than that right? Oh my goodness the room mate! Hahahaha! I don’t want to say too much - because spoilers - but just wow! Tori has her hands full with this one! I really can’t wait to see what comes next!
