Book Review - Two Witches and a Whiskey + Mini Review

Two Witches and a Whiskey by Annette Marie
(Guild Codex: Spellbound #3)
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Three months ago, I landed a job as a bartender. But not at a bar—at a guild. Yeah, the magic kind.

I'm not a badass mage like my three smokin' hot best friends. I'm not a sorcerer or an alchemist, or even a wussy witch. I'm just a human, slinging drinks like a pro and keeping my non-magical nose out of mythic business. Seriously, I know my limits.

So why am I currently standing in a black-magic ritual circle across from a fae lord?

Somewhere behind me, my three mage friends are battling for their lives. Somewhere near my feet is the rogue witch I just knocked out with a stolen spell. And I have about five seconds to convince this very angry sea god not to shmoosh me like a bug.

I'm pretty sure this wasn't part of the job description.

Have you started the series yet? If not, go here:
Three Mages and a Margarita | Dark Arts and a Daiquiri

OK so Tori has put herself into mortal peril - again, but for reals this time, she might actually die if the guild (or Zak) can’t fix this horrible mess. Oh Tori, what have you gone and done now?
This girl is so so good at getting herself into trouble. Well I guess that’s what happens when you’re an impulsive, fearless human who works at a magical guild and hangs out with bounty hunting mythics.
I think this is my favourite in the series so far. Just so much wow. More druid, more fae, more life threatening situations than you can poke a stick at!

Book Review - Dark Arts and a Daiquiri

Dark Arts and a Daiquiri by Annette Marie
(Guild Codex: Spellbound #2)
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

When I found myself facing down the scariest black-magic felon in the city, practically daring him to abduct me, I had to wonder exactly how I ended up here.
It all started when I accidentally landed a job as a bartender--but not at a bar. At a guild, populated by mages, sorcerers, alchemists, witches, and psychics. Good thing this lame-o human is adaptable, right?
Then my favorite guild members--three sexy, powerful, and intermittently charming mages--asked for my help. Did they want access to my encyclopedic knowledge of cocktails? Oh no. They wanted to wrap me up in a pretty ribbon and plunk me in the crosshairs of a murderous rogue to lure him out of hiding.
So that's what we did. And that's why I'm here. About to be kidnapped. Oh, and our grand plan for safely capturing said murderous rogue? Yeah, that completely fell apart about two minutes ago. Why did I agree to this again?

Check out my review for book 1: Three Mages and a Margarita

So Tori has gotten herself into trouble again. All in the name of saving a missing teenage girl of course, she wouldn’t do something dangerous and reckless for no reason! Also her three mage friends Aaron, Ezra and Kai are almost totally to blame for this one, but they are trying to catch the most notorious rogue in the city. One needs the correct bait for such an ambitious endeavour. Of course it all goes pear-shaped immediately, leading to oodles of fun and an epic magical showdown.

TTT: Books I Loved But Never Reviewed

It's time for another Top Ten Tuesday: Brought to you by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.

5 Star Books I Haven't Reviewed ..... Yet

Well, considering I started this blog less than a year ago, I could pick SO MANY books for this list. I haven't even done a 'Favourites' page, which I plan to do, at some point. For today, I'll stick with my 5 star reviews that I plan to re-read in the not-too-distant future, at which point I will write proper reviews for all of them. [Titles link to Goodreads]

ARC Review - Shadow in the Empire of Light

Shadow in the Empire of Light by Jane Routley
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

A magical novel of intrigue, mystery and family drama from the award-winning author of Aramaya and Fire Angels!

Shine’s life is usually dull: an orphan without magic in a family of powerful mages, she’s left to run the family estate with only an eccentric aunt and telepathic cat for company.

But when the family descend on the house for the annual Fertility Festival, Shine is plunged into intrigue; stolen letters, a fugitive spy and family drama mix with an unexpected murder, and Shine is forced to decide both her loyalties and future...

Thank you to NetGalley and Rebellion Publishing for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book has a telepathic cat therefore it is awesome - ‘nuff said!

OK just kidding here’s my review:

Overall Thoughts

I enjoyed this book but it definitely didn’t blow me away. It was slow to start as we’re getting to know all the characters, but it picked up about halfway and the plot ended up being quite fun. There’s a lot of family members who all have amazing light-themed names like Illuminant, Sparklea, and Splendance. I found myself referring to the family tree at the beginning of the book pretty often. The family drama gets pretty ridiculous, but there are some interesting side characters that I enjoyed.

July Update/NEWTS TBR

I haven't done an update post since April... partly because I haven't been reading as much as I would like to each month, but also just life getting me down. I'm hoping to try and make these posts more regularly, so here goes;

July Wrap-up:
I (barely) read 3 books in July, Shadow and Bone, Four Shifters and a Stranger (which is 3 chapters) and Shadow in the Empire of Light (which I'm just over halfway through). Reviews coming soon. Moving right along,

TTT: Books With Colours in the Title

It's time for another Top Ten Tuesday: Brought to you by That Artsy Reader Girl. If you're participating this week let me know in the comments, I would love to hear what you picked for this week.

I thought this topic would be super easy, but when I looked on my shelf there was actually only a couple of books with colours in the title. So I ended up searching through my books on Goodreads, and here is what I found:
